Sepp Piontek, the legendary architect of Danish football's golden era, has sadly passed away at 85. His family shared the heartbreaking news in a brief statement: “Sepp died after a short illness. He leaves behind his beloved wife Gitte, children Stephanie, Jacob, and Malene, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Please respect our need for privacy right now.”

Arriving in Denmark in 1979 as national team coach, the no-nonsense German with his thick accent and iron discipline replaced the easygoing Kurt “Nikkelaj” Nielsen—and turned everything upside down. He forged the unforgettable “Danish Dynamite” squad of the 1980s: fearless, flamboyant, and utterly thrilling to watch.

Piontek delivered milestone after milestone: Denmark’s first-ever Euros appearance in 1984 (fighting to the semi-finals before falling to Spain on penalties), shock wins over world champions Italy (3-1 in ’81), a famous 1-0 triumph at Wembley against England in ’83, and that epic 4-2 demolition of the Soviet Union in ’85. The crescendo? Qualification for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico—the nation’s first—where the team stormed through the group with three straight victories before a brutal 5-1 exit to Spain in the round of 16.

Those magical years ignited the roligan spirit, transforming the national team from underdogs into a beloved national obsession. Even after a tougher Euro 1988, Piontek’s legacy endured. He stepped down in 1990, married Gitte in 1988, and stayed deeply tied to Denmark.

He went on to coach Turkey’s national side and Bursaspor, had stints at AaB and Silkeborg (until 1999), and even led Greenland’s team. Retiring in 2004, he enjoyed quiet years in his Funen home in Blommenslyst.

Sepp Piontek didn’t just coach Denmark it was a donation of great victories that gave a nation a football fairy tale. Rest in peace, Sepp.
